Introduction

Heungkong Women's Entrepreneurship Fund

Background and overview of the Project: Since the commencement of its involvement in charitable causes in 1992, the Heungkong Group has gradually discovered that, though they can immediately improve the circumstances of the recipient, mere donations often result in feeding recipients’ passivity, reliance, and demands. That is not the intention of charity. The purpose of charity should be to find a sustainable method of assistance, and to create better development conditions for the recipients by building on ideas and fostering local economic improvement. In 2011, the Heungkong Charitable Foundation sponsored RMB10 million to establish the “Heungkong Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund” which provides micro-financing to women from poverty-stricken areas of the Guangdong Province to help them start a business, support them to develop small entrepreneurship programs, and provide them with technical training and consultation. “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” “Heungkong Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund” will always try to help rural women to improve their living environment through their own efforts.

Project purpose: To create a sustainable development environment in rural areas

Project philosophy: To provide interest free micro-financing to rural women to start a business, and to help them improve their circumstances and living environment through their own efforts.

Objects of assistance: Rural poverty-stricken women

Scope of assistance: Guangdong Province

Objectives and recent developments of the Project: Using a principal amount of RMB10 million, “Heungkong Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund”, entrusting the Guangdong Women and Children’s Foundation, has commenced a project to support “extremely poor single mothers” and “impoverished women” in many poverty-stricken villages of the Guangdong Province who harbor entrepreneurial aspirations by providing financial poverty alleviation assistance, interest-free loans and related skills training. Using RMB10 million as base number and 3 years as a cycle, “Heungkong Women’s Entrepreneurship Fund” is estimated to be able to help women from 500 households to become self-sustaining and also to resolve hardships in family responsibility and child rearing and education brought about by their having to find work away from their hometowns.
